In all cases, the services and treatments I've received at La Jolla Family Smile Design have been outstanding. I have recommended them highly to family, friends, and newcomers to our community. I look forward to continuing as their patient for many years to come. I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Breziner who not only restored most of my teeth, but more importantly, my trust. My anxiety was sky high when I met Dr. B. And he immediately understood that building trust was going to be as important as addressing my complex dental situation. He instantly put me at ease with his professional, yet compassionate and warm demeanor and addressed all of my questions and concerns.

Same day Crowns

Everyone at this office is always incredibly friendly and professional and they take great care of my teeth. Dr. Breziner has helped me with a variety of dental issues and has set me up to avoid major issues in the future. The office is always very clean and you feel like you're in great hands and getting the best possible care. Our dentists usually start by suggesting simple lifestyle changes, such as switching to a soft foods-only diet and practicing relaxation exercises to control tension in the jaw. Taking over-the-counter pain medication or muscle relaxers and applying hot or cold compresses can soothe discomfort. Stress management techniques can help minimize stress that contributes to involuntary teeth grinding or clenching.

It is a “ball-and-socket” joint, with a disc of cartilage that cushions the head of the jawbone and the skull. The TMJ joint may be small, but it is extremely complex and plays a crucial role in many important daily functions. Your TMJ works with the surrounding muscles and ligaments to control your ability to open and close your mouth, chew, speak and swallow. Traditional dentures can cause discomfort and instability. With implants, dentures are able to be secured in place to avoid the frustrations of slippage.

Freestyle Braids Are the Trendiest Way to Wear Cornrows

Cropped tops are hairstyles that, as the name suggests, crop the top part of the hair while cutting the back and sides, usually in the form of a fade. Cropped tops are typically paired with middle or high fades, but low fades work just as well. These styles have an undercut, which is a type of buzz cut that is done on the sides and back of the head. Today, we’re talking about low undercuts, which aren’t as neat and tidy as middle or high fades but are simpler and more natural in appearance. Short hairstyles can go from simple, low-key cuts to longer, more striking hairstyles.

Short Curls

First of all, it looks much neater due to the way that it’s styled. It also tends to be thicker than the classic punk-rock mohawks we’re used to seeing, which gives the hair more volume. At first glance, spiked short hair might look like a quiff or a fauxhawk, but there is a difference – and that is how the hair is positioned. Spiky hair is styled upwards, giving it the name “spiked hair”. If you’re looking to stand out without using your hair, opt for a hard part. As its name suggests, this parting method involves parting the hair at the side and top.

Once the burst fade shape is complete, remove the guard from the clippers. Carefully trim the hair closer to the skin around the ears and at the nape of the neck, creating a more detailed Burst fade effect. Next, use the detailing trimmer for precision work, carving out intricate designs, and line work on the sides to ensure the freestyle design is clear and sharp. Always take care to be detailed and precise to bring that extra layer of flair to the look.

Hairstyle Trends 2022: Embracing Naturally Curly Hair

Keep those natural curls in tip-top condition with a good men’s haircut, the best shampoo and conditioner for men, along with specialized men’s hair gels or hair creams. It’s official, guys with curls are more attractive than those with straight hair. Check out Hollywood hotties Jason Momoa, Kit Harington, and Penn Badgley. Just remember to follow expert hair care tips so your curls stay bouncy, full, and healthy. The regulation cut is one of the most popular short haircuts for men. The style involves trimming down the top and tapering the sides, leaving it up to you to decide on how much skin you want to show.

Clean Shave

The long curly fade is a contemporary style that complements its wearer’s confidence. It’s a powerful way of embracing the aesthetic of natural curls while also keeping your hair care routine short, sweet, and simple. By leaving some length on top, you’re able to show off your curls, while the undercut and fade on the sides work to emphasize the look. The scissor crop and mid fade are similar to the messy cropped top, but this time with a mid fade instead of a low undercut. This hairstyle uses a scissor crop on the top of your head, which is a variation of the crop haircut. As the name suggests, the scissor crop involves the use of scissors instead of shavers to get the job done.

Bed Head by TIGI Get Twisted Anti-Frizz Finishing Spray

It’s an effortless, hassle-free haircut that will instantly change your look. A large upside to a single-length cut is it doesn’t look sloppy after a couple of weeks away from the barber chair. This is definitely worth considering for low-maintenance guys. Justin Timberlake and Nick Jonas agree it’s a really cool haircut for men. Rather than a natural hairline, your barber will use clippers to line up and shave straight lines and angles into the temples, forehead, sideburns, and back. When it comes to popular men’s haircuts, it’s a real head-turner.

The Caesar cut is named after the infamous Roman Emperor and is popular today with ‘A’ list celebs, including Zac Efron and Post Malone. It features horizontal short-cut bangs that are styled forward, and there are many versions, including faded and textured, depending on the type of look you’re going for. From chiseled military men to 80s hip-hop style, flat tops have evolved to adapt to your personality. Flat top haircuts feature short hair on the back and sides with volume on top, cut and styled so that it’s leveled flat and angular. Emphasize strong features and experiment with angles and lines on the hairline, parting, or temples. The line-up is one of the best haircuts for men with attitude, and can easily elevate any fresh buzz.

From sleek, French-inspired bobs to shaggy, textured strands we’re seeing such a wide array of hairstyle trends in 2022. Wispy bangs have recently gained popularity across TikTok, and we’re positive they’ll pick up even more throughout 2022.

Keep your curls looking hydrated and nourished by using SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. We love this set because it uses silk protein and neem oil to make your hair soft while repairing and adding shine. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen our favorite models and celebrities opt for medium brunette shades instead of the blonde balayage that was so popular.

To freestyle crisis cross braids, divide hair vertically into two sections, then horizontally into halves. Start braiding diagonally from one half to the bottom of the other – crisis cross. Avoid adding too much hair when they intersect – don’t want no bulky braids! You can add other designs around the crisis cross to make it unique.

Achieve this by styling the top hair away from the part using hair products. You can do this by brushing a prominent piece of hair up and back from the forehead. Here, the fringe or bangs and the rest of the hair are the same lengths all the way around. These cuts were popular for men in the sixties, but they are perfect for today’s modern guy. If you think the “business in the front, party in the back” mullet haircut belongs only in 1980s style, you’re wrong! Short on the top and sides but kept long at the back, the mullet is dramatic, fun, and tongue-in-cheek.

Further experiments on FSM and non-FSM designs have demonstrated 69% and 72% reductions compared to directed sequence generation. However, most of these results still suffer from the limitation of the statistical nature of ML. A more comprehensive review of ML-based coverage-directed test generation (CDG) gives an overview of several ML models and their experiment results.

These companies face challenges in setting up and maintaining hybrid or on-premise solutions. By contrast, cloud-based EDA reduces the effort customers require to achieve their performance and cost goals for the design and verification of semiconductors. AWS Software Partners and AWS Systems Integrator (SI) Partners offer solutions for EDA in the cloud, as well as guidance based on Scale-Out Computing on AWS. EDA 4.0 is transforming electronic design automation through the power of artificial intelligence and delivers several key technologies that will help engineers realize the revolutionary changes of Industry 4.0. In this article we provide a comprehensive survey of the potential contributions of machine learning in addressing various aspects of functional verification. The article highlights the typical applications of ML in functional verification and summarizes the state-of-the-art achievements in this field.

It can also take the form of an interactive process that is guided by a designer. The first trade show for EDA was held at the Design Automation Conference in 1984 and in 1986, Verilog, another popular high-level design language, was first introduced as a hardware description language by Gateway Design Automation. Simulators quickly followed these introductions, permitting direct simulation of chip designs and executable specifications. Recent innovations in AI promise to accelerate the chip design lifecycle significantly. EDA tools are adopting more pervasive AI to increase the EDA engineer’s productivity and quality of output. Such advancements are a compelling ingredient in our own internal AMD recipes to create more innovative silicon.

And automate the release process to streamline IP integration and improve collaboration. Calibre – Calibre is a complete IC verification and DFM optimization EDA platform that speeds designs from creation to manufacturing, addressing all sign-off requirements. It is also worth noting that the cost of an error in a manufactured chip can be catastrophic. Chips errors cannot be “patched.” The entire chip must be re-designed and re-manufactured. The time and cost of this process is often too long and too expensive, resulting in a failure of the entire project. So, the complexity to design chips is high and the need to do it flawlessly is also required.

Verification EDA Tools

This capability is instrumental in static code analysis, requirement engineering, and coding assistance for several popular programming languages. Given enough training data, it is reasonable to believe that these techniques can train ML models for various functional verification tasks. The chips were easier to lay out and more likely to function correctly, since their designs could be simulated more thoroughly prior to construction. Although the languages and tools have evolved, this general approach of specifying the desired behavior in a textual programming language and letting the tools derive the detailed physical design remains the basis of digital IC design today. Smaller, more powerful devices across healthcare, consumer electronics, aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors require highly complex integrated circuits. EDA tools are essential in this process, allowing engineers to design, simulate, and optimize these chips efficiently.

Helix IPLM is even more effective when paired with Helix Core, the industry-standard data management system with unlimited storage. Helix Core easily handles the millions of files that are common in EDA tools, including large binary files, and manages the complex file relationships found in semiconductor designs. When using EDA tools to create circuit and semiconductor technology, it is vital to keep track of every change to your team’s designs and to work with the correct version of files and IPs across your tool suite.

This means more government resources will be put into R&D in this area, including China’s government-backed semiconductor investment fund, which invested in the Chinese EDA company Huada Empyrean in 2018. Chinese hardware giant Huawei was similarly restricted in 2019, losing access to all US EDA tools, and the Biden administration has continued the Trump administration’s preference for export controls as a trade war weapon. “Their previous round of restrictions on Huawei was so successful [that] they found this to be the track to pursue,” says Xiaomeng Lu, an analyst at the consultancy firm Eurasia Group. This software now forms the latest battle front in the tech trade war between China and the United States.

But poor digital infrastructure and regulatory bottlenecks could slow adoption.

Yet, it does demonstrate the degree to which electronic design automation can be leveraged to help improve the reliability of your PCBA design process. Other benefits of employing electronic design automation include the following. With the dramatic expansion of semiconductor technology, there is a movement toward a need for a larger platform of tools and technologies which may signal the next phase of the industry’s development. Synopsys is a leading provider of electronic design automation solutions and services. From the name, it may sound as if EDA tools are only important to chip design firms, but they are also used by chip manufacturers to verify that a design is feasible before production. There’s no way for a foundry to make a single chip as a prototype; it has to invest in months of time and production, and each time, hundreds of chips are fabricated on the same semiconductor base. Therefore, manufacturers rely on a special type of EDA tool to do their own validation. Electronic design automation (also known as electronic computer-aided design, or ECAD) is the specialized software used in chipmaking.

Its unique technologies can reduce design cycles by 50 percent or more while significantly improving overall quality and resource efficiency. EDA is not a single application, but a diverse mix of high-performance compute (HPC) tools that require powerful hardware. There is no “one size fits all” hardware configuration that works across all aspects of EDA. Prior to joining Tenstorrent, he served two years as Senior Vice President of Intel's Silicon Engineering Group. He has held roles as Tesla's Vice President of Autopilot and Low Voltage Hardware, Corporate Vice President and Chief Cores Architect at AMD, and Vice President of Engineering and Chief Architect at P.A. Jim has led multiple successful silicon designs over the decades, from the DEC Alpha processors, to AMD K7/K8/K12, HyperTransport and the AMD Zen family, the Apple A4/A5 processors, and Tesla's self-driving car chip. Significant breakthroughs in ML techniques, models, and algorithms have been witnessed in recent years.

Bayesian Network genetic algorithms and genetic programming approaches, Markov model, data mining, and inductive logic programming are all experiments with various degrees of success. The first phase began in the 1960s and saw commercial availability of computer-assisted interactive graphics design systems. These systems targeted multiple markets, including cartography, mechanical, and architectural design. These systems also found use for interactive design of integrated circuit layouts.

The application of ML in functional verification is not yet visible, and the unavailability of large training datasets has prevented existing research from fully exploiting this solution’s potential. As the cost of fixing a bug grows exponentially along the stages of IC development, static code analysis offers an attractive option to improve code quality and maintainability at an earlier stage of design development. The application of ML on code summarization has been experimented with in more popular computer languages, e.g., Python and JavaScript. Several groups of approaches have experimented with various degrees of success. Information retrieval (IR) based approaches focus on applying NLP to source code and looking for similar code with existing summarization in place. This group of approaches heavily relies on the quality of the existing code with summaries.

Barbies Margot Robbie Gives a Tour of the Dreamhouse

barbie movie house

"Not super practical, but nothing is with Barbie," Robbie said. Other standouts include the bubble bath with perpetually suspended bubbles, a massive Barbie wardrobe, and handmade props that tell the story of Barbie's evolution from the late '50s through today. Weird Barbie (played by Kate Mckinnon)—whose look might remind you of the Cynthia doll in Rugrats—lives in a secluded residence. Influenced by Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho, the hilltop structure has a winding stair-clad path and is marked by a colorful, funky gated entrance. It's designed to look squashed since the architecture doesn't feature a single right angle. While it lacks some essentials, like a kitchen, Weird Barbie's home is a desirable piece of toy real estate—here's why, with deeper insight from Greenwood and Spencer (including where they got the fun living room rug and bubble chandeliers!).

Greta Gerwig cast Ryan Gosling after loving him on "Weekend Update"

When Ken turns Barbie’s dream house into his "Mojo Dojo Casa House," the redesign is everything you'd expect of a hideous man cave. "I love the fact that if he was in one of his leather chairs, he would have his mini fridges stacked up around him like he's in Game of Thrones," Spencer says. If you thought the Barbie Land lettering in the film was just a cute design introductory to the fantasy world, you didn't look close enough. "When you go into Barbie Land, you go into the dot of the 'i' of Barbie Land," production designer Sarah Greenwood tells House Beautiful. "So the streets are written as Barbie Land, and the 'i' is the circle that they live in."

The treehouse was replicated from the toy.

Other previous reports stated that Marisa Abela (Industry) and Rhea Perlman (Cheers) are also in the cast. Further details about the roles remain tightly under wraps. But it’s been a kind of a benediction for what was considered one of my weakest moments as an artist. It’s a critique of celebrity culture in a way that wasn’t really part of the conversation at the time. And I think maybe critics felt like I was complaining about being famous with my own tiny little pimple version of fame. And it was also such a tonal shift from my very warm and inviting “I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing.” And the collective opinion sort of was handed down from on high that it was terrible and nobody invited it anywhere. It had a tiny little blip of a life, but nobody actually saw it.

And now I’ve spoken to about four young critics who knew none of my work, had seen nothing, couldn’t care less about me versus the next person. Earlier this month, Airbnb revealed that guests can sign up to stay at the life-sized doll house, free of charge, as part of a promotion by Mattel. Barbie is filled with dance numbers that are heavily influenced by 1940s and 50s Technicolor musicals like Singin’ in the Rain.

Only a few lucky Barbie superfans will get to snooze at the pink-powered seaside property, but these cool Barbiecore finds let you recreate the whimsical experience at home. But the specific touches are what truly made the set a work of art. At one point during the movie, Ken walks around in a pair of boxing shoes that are made specifically for smooth surfaces, which is fine because there’s no real grass, gravel, or dirt in Barbie Land. Even though the homes were scaled down, they were still large structures. "When people were on the top bedroom floor, they had to be wired off," Spencer tells House Beautiful.

Barbie’s 1950s origins inspired the Dream House aesthetic

Leaves are growing out of the roof, and a swing is tied to a protruding branch. Technically it is the Chelsea Tree House—nearly an exact replica, scaled up to fit human actors. Given that Barbie first came to market in 1959, Gerwig and Oscar-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood decided to run with a midcentury modern aesthetic for Barbie’s Dream House and many of her fashions. Barbie lives on the sort of suburban cul de sac idealized in that era. Handler’s relationship with her daughter Barbara (after whom Barbie is named) manifested as a plot point involving a mother and daughter in the film. “A Barbie movie is only ever going to be a mother-daughter movie on so many levels because it was Ruth Handler and Barbara—that was the relationship,” says Gerwig.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Live-Action Movie: What We Know So Far

"They did such an amazing job, my mind just couldn't wrap around the idea that the houses were actual human size and that everyone hadn't been shrunk down and put into a toy land!" one YouTube user wrote. Another commenter added, "The dreamhouse came straight out of a fairytale book. It really is something Barbie would want to live in." Like the toy it's designed after, the all-pink Dreamhouse is completely open-concept, omitting walls to showcase the living room, breakfast nook, bar, and pool area all at once. The house also features a kitchen stocked with plastic food containers and 2D decals printed with everything from ketchup to a two-tier cake stacked with whipped cream.

“Please, please, please can we have a Dreamhouse where she has a slide that goes from her bedroom down to her pool, because that is my goal in life.” We get it. The massive compound features a massive pool and waterslide, a dance floor, several Barbie-inspired bedrooms and plenty of pink. The true showpiece of the house, though, is the swirling slide that connects the upstairs bedroom to the faux pool. "It's actually funny to see how many people avoid walking [on the pool] — everyone walks around the pool," Robbie said.

Obviously, oceanfront property in one of America’s most desired enclaves is going to cost a pretty penny. But a gaudy manor inspired by the stylistic choices of a fashionista children’s doll is a bit of an unprecedented sale. The house used for the show, Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, is located in Santa Clarita in Southern California. This picturesque suburb of Los Angeles is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, so of course it has stunning views and everything you could possibly need.

Spend a day with Barbie and Ken in a replica of the iconic DreamHouse. As seen in Barbie The Movie, this buildable replica is loaded with details including a spiral staircase and a pool with a slide. Build the 3-story home complete with a kitchen, bar, bedroom, spa and more. This building toy for collectors also features fashion, food and pool accessories.

The house is situated in a neighborhood of Santa Clarita called Canyon Country in Northwestern Los Angeles County. Hit play on the official "Barbie" album, and take a closer look at every inch of Barbie's life-size Dreamhouse ahead. Fill your space with the Barbie-approved aroma of raspberry, strawberry leaves, brown sugar, crushed mint leaves and “plastic doll accord” with Glasshouse’s Barbie DreamHouse Stawberry & Dream candle, which comes in a chic lidded glass vessel. Airbnb will celebrate the film with a donation to Save the Children to support equal access to learning resources for children, families and communities in over 100 countries. The funds will help “to build girls’ confidence and help them excel in school – ensuring everyone has equal opportunity to achieve success,” per a release.

At the Academy, “I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing” will be followed by a Q&A moderated by writer-director Semi Chellas. A 35mm screening of “Mansfield Park” will be followed by a talk moderated by “Carol” screenwriter Phyllis Nagy. Raised a Calvinist, Rozema did not see a movie until she was 16 years old (“The Exorcist,” if you can imagine that being the first film you ever saw). In the film Kidman plays a widow still grieving the untimely death of her husband a decade ago when a 10-year-old boy arrives at her apartment and announces himself as the reincarnation of her late spouse. The footage ends with some blink-and-you'll-miss it glimpses of the over-the-top film, including cast members Ryan Gosling, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, and Simu Liu. It was announced on October 22, 2021, that Ryan Gosling was in final negotiations for the role of Ken, the well-known romantic interest of Barbie and a wonderful choice for a leading man to star opposite Robbie.

Gosling's long resume prior to Barbie includes several comedic turns, such as his delightful work in Crazy, Stupid, Love with Emma Stone. And, of course, there's Gosling's work as a Saturday Night Live Host, with his third turn coming on April 13. This three-story lookalike to Barbie's iconic mansion looks a lot like a set out of Warner Bros. upcoming "Barbie" movie. “While it certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste, the 3,500-square-foot space, views of the Pacific Ocean, private pool, and totally unique design result in a hefty price tag for the property,” said Tony Mariotti, CEO of RubyHome. After catching our first glimpse at HGTV's real-life Barbie Dreamhouse, we're all wondering where in the world is this house?

But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.” Here's what we know about the doll drama so far. The analysis also includes a breakdown of possible rental value, stating that renting the property could cost as much as $77,000 per month — if Landlord Barbie ever becomes a thing. Malibu-based luxury real estate company RubyHome, has put the home’s price tag at $10 million — significantly higher than the estimates from the online real estate portals.

The story is an irreverent show-business satire about a trio of teenage runaways who form a band called the Lovedolls and hit it big, navigating their way around sleazy would-be managers, a rival girl gang and other obstacles.

Gerwig described the boardroom as "a six-year-old girl's pink and fluffy heart" in the movie's script. The playful atmosphere emphasizes the childlike qualities of the executives who fill it. If you're eager to analyze it further, get more insight into the vibrant set design and its contrasting black-and-white cubicle set here. While the dream houses look simple, that’s the very reason they were challenging to construct. Without walls, the homes are mainly floors, poles, and beams. ("The world outside had to become the wallpaper," Greenwood notes.) Each home has a chimney that visually grounds it, but the overall architecture is a bit skeleton-like and was challenging to make sturdy.

The seaside property with panoramic views first went up for rent in 2019, and Ken has redecorated the bright pink pad ahead of Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie film. The seemingly white shade on set is, in fact, a very light pink. But for the fluorescent pink shade, the production used Rosco's entire supply. "They used as much paint as we had," Lauren Proud, the vice president of global marketing for Rosco, told the outlet. The Mattel office is meant to be halfway between the real world and Barbie Land.

Sandra Bernhard gives an astonishing performance in “The King of Comedy.” “The First Wives Club” and “Kissing Jessica Stein” also will screen in 35mm. “We were all kids that grew up in front of a TV set,” said Markey.

I studied philosophy at Calvin, so I didn’t have this idea of what film should be. I’ve even started to cry a couple of times talking about this. Every task and piece of instruction has a purpose that fits in with the overarching goals and goals of the course. As previously stated, backward design is beneficial to instructors because it innately encourages intentionality during the design process. It continually encourages the instructor to establish the purpose of doing something before implementing it into the curriculum. Therefore, backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses. Once the learning goals, or desired results, have been identified, instructors will have an easier time developing assessments and instruction around grounded learning outcomes. Well known for his work with thinking skills, McTighe has coordinated statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models, and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking.

Articles

Once the learning goals have been established, the second stage involves consideration of assessment. The backward design framework suggests that instructors should consider these overarching learning goals and how students will be assessed prior to consideration of how to teach the content. For this reason, backward design is considered a much more intentional approach to course design than traditional methods of design. The first question listed above has instructors consider the knowledge that is worth being familiar with which is the largest circle, meaning it entails the most information.

Designing and Using Rubrics to Evaluate and Improve Student Performance

At this stage it is important to consider a wide range of assessment methods in order to ensure that students are being assess over the goals the instructor wants students to attain. Sometimes, the assessments do not match the learning goals, and it becomes a frustrating experience for students and instructors. Use the list below to help brainstorm assessment methods for the learning goals of the course.

McTighe is an accomplished author, having coauthored more than a dozen books, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design® series with Grant Wiggins. He has written more than 50 articles and book chapters and has been published in leading journals, including Educational Leadership (ASCD) and Education Week. Teacher Ron Berger discusses how to discusses a culture of excellence through authentic, project-based learning. Marc Chun described the qualities of authentic performance tasks and how to teach toward them. Neurologist and teacher, Dr. Judy Wills, discusses how UbD reflects insights about learning from neuroscience. Though he always kept his own recording career going, there were periods, sometimes lasting several years, when he was drawn away from solo projects--including about a dozen albums--by his much-in-demand role accompanying singers (including Lena Horne, Helen Humes and Kay Starr). The New York City BOE offers an informative video that describes the use of Norman Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) framework for teaching and assessing the Common Core Standards.

Furthermore, the answers to question #3 regarding enduring understandings can be adapted to form concrete, specific learning goals for the students; thus, identifying the desired results that instructors want their students to achieve. In Understanding by Design, Wiggins and McTighe argue that backward design is focused primarily on student learning and understanding. When teachers are designing lessons, units, or courses, they often focus on the activities and instruction rather than the outputs of the instruction. Therefore, it can be stated that teachers often focus more on teaching rather than learning. This perspective can lead to the misconception that learning is the activity when, in fact, learning is derived from a careful consideration of the meaning of the activity. Educators from kindergarten through college can get everything they need—guidelines, stages, templates, and tips—to start designing lessons, units, and courses that lead to improved student performance and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Subject Area Resources

Prior to that, he helped lead Maryland’s standards-based reforms, including the development of performance-based statewide assessments. As the quote below highlights, teaching is not just about engaging students in content. Student learning and understanding can be gauged more accurately through a backward design approach since it leverages what students will need to know and understand during the design process in order to progress. The knowledge and skills at this substage are considered important to know and do. The information that fits within this question could be the facts, concepts, principles, processes, strategies, and methods students should know when they leave the course. The big ideas and important understandings are referred to as enduring understandings because these are the ideas that instructors want students to remember sometime after they’ve completed the course.

Linda Darling-Hammond makes the case for expanded use of performance assessments. Yeager has nine bassists, which amounts to about one-fourth of all jazz majors. In any other year, according to Yeager, bassist Royce Ferguson, a junior, would have been at the top of the heap, but this year he’s running neck-in-neck with fellow SDSU student Kevin Delgado, the bassist for San Diego Latin jazz groups Sol E Mar and Afro Rumba. Which means Ferguson is good, and Wednesday night’s junior recital featuring Ferguson should produce some first-rate music. In fact, the modest Wiggins has recorded a library of music that spans some 50 years, including dozens of original songs, making him a living encyclopedia of jazz.

Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. In contrast, the backward design approach has instructors consider the learning goals of the course first. These learning goals embody the knowledge and skills instructors want their students to have learned when they leave the course.

Information that fits within this question is the lowest priority content information that will be mentioned in the lesson, unit, or course. “Last year, I was starved for bass players,” says Bill Yeager, director of jazz studies at San Diego State University. Hofmann wittily turns the tables on usual roles with her version of the Gershwins’ “Embraceable You,” giving Magnusson’s bass the lead melodic role at first while she plays backup counterpoint, then switching into an improv mode while Magnusson thrums along underneath her flute. “It’s some great playing, she’s a wonderful player, just some good jazz,” said Phil Sheridan, vice president of Jazz Alliance, explaining why his company selected Hofmann’s project as one of its 20 releases for 1992. MyLife aggregates publicly available information from government, social, and other sources, plus personal reviews written by others.

Wiggins and McTighe provide an expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding. The incorporation of backward design also lends itself to transparent and explicit instruction. If the teacher has explicitly defined the learning goals of the course, then they have a better idea of what they want the students to get out of learning activities. Furthermore, if done thoroughly, it eliminates the possibility of doing certain activities and tasks for the sake of doing them.

The second question above allows the instructor to focus on more important knowledge, the knowledge and skills that are important to know and do. Finally, with the third question, instructors begin to detail the enduring understandings, overarching learning goals, and big ideas that students should retain. By answering the three questions presented at this stage, instructors will be able to determine the best content for the course.
